Careers Bulletin 12th May 2022

MESSAGE FROM OUR SIXTH FORM CAREERS TEAM

Welcome to our Careers Bulletin - your fortnightly round up of all careers related information post-Piggott with opportunities which we will collate for you to easily access as you focus on your future planning.

Mrs van den Berghen (RCDP (Registered Career Development Practitioner) and Miss Giacomet (Careers and Pastoral support) are your Advice and Guidance Mentors - within Sixth Form. Feel free to request an appointment if you would like any help as you search universities, apprenticeships, work experience and future career pathways.

Have you thought about a Degree Apprenticeship?

Degree apprenticeships give 18 to 19-year-old school and college leavers an alternative to university. These apprenticeships have all the benefits of degree education, plus the perks of receiving a salary and walking straight into a career.

You’ll spend most of your time working, and you’ll also study part-time at university.

A degree apprenticeship enables you to gain a full undergraduate or master’s degree while you work and takes between three and six years to complete, depending on the course level. Degree apprenticeships are available in lots of industries, from hands-on fields like nursing, engineering and teaching, to more office-based roles like business administration, finance, and law.

For more information visit Degree apprenticeships - Learn more here (ucas.com)

Or to search current degree apprenticeship roles, check out Degree apprenticeships in Job Search | RateMyApprenticeship and Find an apprenticeship (findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk)

Work Experience

Work experience is also valuable content for a UCAS application. It'll help you check out career areas and show evidence of useful skills for coping with university study and life.

Top tips for finding work experience

  • Get online. Search local authority websites, local business and LinkedIn
  • Ask parents or friends for useful contacts and opportunities
  • For speculative enquiries to employers, write to them and send a brief CV and covering letter stating clearly when you're available and what you are looking for i.e. work experience, volunteering, shadowing etc. This can be done online or even by visiting the organisation itself and talking to the manager.
  • And remember if you don't ask, you don't get!
