MESSAGE FROM OUR SIXTH FORM CAREERS TEAM

Welcome to our Careers Bulletin - your fortnightly round up of all careers related information post-Piggott with opportunities which we will collate for you to easily access as you focus on your future planning. 

Mrs van den Berghen is your Advice and Guidance Mentor - RCDP (Registered Career Development Practitioner) with in Sixth Form - feel free to request an appointment if you'd like any help as you search universities, apprenticeships, work experience and future pathways. 

Last week we welcomed Miss Giacomet who has joined as an Advice and Guidance Mentor covering both careers and pastoral care within Sixth Form. Miss Giacomet worked previously as a Work Experience Coordinator and will be helping you source and secure your work experience placements.

National Careers Week 7th - 12th  March 2022

This week is National Careers Week (NCW) which is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people leaving education.

On the NCW website you will find lots of information and resources to provide you with guides, planners and information into the career you want.

International Women's Day

Tuesday 8th March was International Women's Day. This year's theme was 'Break The Bias' which aims to promote breaking bias in communities, workplaces and in our schools, colleges and universities, to ultimately help build a gender equal world.

This webinar is available to watch now and looks at how the pandemic has disproportionately affected women resulting in alarming job loss. The speakers on this conversation talk about how they are driving success in their organisations and reshaping business to ensure that women's progress persists through motivation, inclusivity and empowerment.

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular pathway with hundreds of apprenticeships across a broad range of industries that you can apply for depending on your qualifications. Here we will keep you abreast of apprenticeship information and opportunities.

University of Surrey

Year 12 Summer Schools

In June and July 2022, the University of Surrey is offering an exciting and wide-ranging programme of free virtual and residential Summer Schools for eligible Year 12 students interested in finding out more about university.

Taking place over the course of 5 days this gives you the chance to experience university-level study learning in an academic environment and working with peers from other schools and colleges through a timetable of lectures, seminars, practical activities. This will also provide you with an opportunity to experience studying a subject you love at university.

Year 12 Subject Specific Taster Days

The University of Surrey will be hosting Subject Specific Taster Days for learners in Year 12 or equivalent.

These on campus events take place during school holidays and invite learners to explore a subject in more detail and discover what it might be like to study at University and the potential careers that it could lead to. You will have the opportunity to hearing from University of Surrey academics and Student Ambassadors who will be available to talk about their experience and what it's like to study at University.

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES

Thames Hospice

Thames Hospice is a local charity that offers Quality of life, to the end of life, for everyone. 

Taking place for 5 days from Monday 25th July, Thames Hospice are planning a week of work experience for all those who are looking to study a clinical or medical degree at University. You will experience observing different roles whilst working, undertake some clinical training in the health care setting and classroom, hear from different professions including consultants and the CEO of the charity and complete some work.

In addition, Thames Hospice are holding a Recruitment Fair on 26th March at the Hospice on the Windsor Road.  The recruitment Fair will take place from 10am to 4pm and will cover gap year roles, volunteering experience and permanent jobs too.
