MESSAGE FROM OUR SIXTH FORM CAREERS TEAM

Welcome to the latest edition of the Careers Bulletin - your fortnightly round up of all things post-Piggott. Information and opportunities are collated for you to easily access as you focus on your future planning.

UNIVERSITIES

86% of our 2019 Year 13s went to University and this is a popular pathway for students at The Piggott.  We will share useful information and event details for anything to do with Universities below. 

 

Introducing Mrs Penson to Year 12s

Mrs Penson can provide tailored support to students aiming for Oxford, Cambridge, Medical or Veterinary. These applications have an early submission deadline at the start of Year 13 so any Year 12s who think this may be for them should look out for future communications from Mrs Penson in due course. 

Subject Discovery With Unifrog

Unifrog have a Webinars tab - use this for links to subject discovery webinars throughout October and November. Upcoming events cover Fine Art, Environmental Science, Human Rights, Economics and Geography.

University and Apprenticeship Search Virtual Fair 

An online fair is being held between 12 noon and 6pm on 20th October. As well as university and apprenticeship exhibitors, there will be live webinars including careers and employability, personal statement advice, choosing and course and degree apprenticeships. Use the link below to register.

Nursing and Midwifery at the University of South Wales

The University of South Wales is holding a free Schools and Colleges Nursing and Midwifery Conference, which will be held virtually via Teams on Wednesday 3rd November 10am - 12noon & Thursday 11th November 4-6pm.

This informative event is an ideal opportunity to hear more about the nursing and midwifery courses offered by the University of South Wales, along with application, personal statement and interview advice from our admission tutors. Current nursing and midwifery students will be present at the event to answer any questions you may have.

Get Into Medicine Webinar - Year 12

The Medic Portal will be talking about the application process for medicine and how to approach it strategically, specifically focusing on the interview process with top tips from Admissions Tutors

Students will also hear from a leading European medical school, the University of Nicosia, on their popular medical degree programme. The talks will be taking place on the following days, from 5 pm to 6.30 pm, online on Zoom:

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular pathway with hundreds of apprenticeships across a broad range of industries that you can apply for depending on your qualifications. Here we will keep you abreast of apprenticeship information and opportunities.

The National Apprenticeship Show South

The National Apprenticeship Show South highlights apprenticeship opportunities and offers information from the region's top employers and training providers

Registering for the event will give you the opportunity to chat with exhibitors via text chat, watch online video content, as well as download useful resources. The event ‘goes live’ on 18th November 2021 between 11.00am and 6.00pm.

Accenture 'How To Land An Apprenticeship' 

Accenture are one of the world’s largest technology consultancies and run an exciting apprenticeship programme. They are holding an online event on 18th October for you to discover what life is like as an apprentice and the impact you could make.

Whether you’re considering Accenture or another employer, this event will allow you to listen current apprentice perspectives on why they chose and apprenticeship and why they chose Accenture. There will also be a senior leader who will help you understand apprentices’ role at Accenture and a recruiter who will give you the inside scoop on how best to prepare for applying.

Volkswagen Group is one of the world's leading automobile manufacturers and the largest car producer in Europe. They have a number of apprenticeship pathways including Service Technician, Parts Advisor or Service Advisor.

The Jaguar Land Rover retailer apprenticeship programme offers both technical and commercial roles encompassing both 1 year and 3 year programmes.

IBM Futures 12 Month Placement Scheme

If you are uncertain about whether to start work, complete an apprenticeship or go to university, IBM's Futures Scheme could be a good option. 

The Futures Placement scheme offers you an invaluable opportunity to work with a world-leading company for 12 months, broadening your horizons and giving you a head start in your career. IBM offer Business, Technical and Design Placements.

IBM also offer apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships across Tech, Sales and a Junior Management Consulting programme.

Deloitte are now open for apprenticeship applications. As well as Finance disciplines, they have opportunities within Legal, Tech and Risk and Regulation. Take a look at their website for further information.

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES

National Teen Book Club

A new programme bringing together thousands of teenagers from all across the UK, this is a shared, virtual book club. Over five weeks, young people can connect for a weekly event every Thursday afternoon. Each week the sessions will cover sharing a reading experience, hearing from an award-winning author and how to skill up and become a published author. 

As you grow in skills and confidence you can take part in actives and guidance to write a 1000 word creative piece published in their first of a kind virtual library. 

National Teen Book Club - Speakers for Schools

Ward Round Medical Work Experience

Being held on 16th October & 7th November, 10:00am-4:00pm: Ward Round Live, a live, online hospital work experience course run by Education Projects. This is a great way for students to get interactive work experience for Medicine applications, as well as taking on the role of a Doctor themselves.

Make sure you regularly check the online programmes offered by Speakers for Schools. They have experiences coming up related to tech, recruitment and energy which you can apply for on their website. Places for these programmes are often in high demand so it's worth checking regularly and registering promptly for anything of interest to try and secure a spot.

Mock Interview Leads To Work Experience

A real success story from the mock interviews - Damon Harris who was in Year 13 last year returned for the mock interview event. Following his interview with local apprentice employer MCFT, he was invited to do some work experience at the organisation with a view to offering him a permanent role. 

As well as interview practice, mock interviews are incredibly valuable for networking purposes. For those that attended, make sure you connect on Linked In with your interviewer if they have a profile and maximise on the experience.
