MESSAGE FROM OUR SIXTH FORM CAREERS TEAM

Welcome to our Careers Bulletin - your fortnightly round up of all things post-Piggott. Information and opportunities will be collated for you to easily access as you focus on your future planning. 

Mrs Chipperfield and Mrs van den Berghen are your Advice and Guidance Mentors within Sixth Form - feel free to request an appointment if you'd like any help as you search universities, apprenticeships, work experience and future pathways. 

 

1-2-1 Student Support

Year 12s - welcome to Sixth Form. Your point of contact for future planning will be Mrs van den Berghen. She plans to meet up with all of you over the course of this year to get you started with your future planning - this  time next year you will be well underway with university, apprenticeship or employment applications so it's never too soon. Look out for an invitation in your inbox. 

Year 13s - you all had a planning discussion last year with Mrs Chipperfield and will find a copy of the notes in your Unifrog locker. If anyone would like a follow up appointment please let Mrs Chipperfield know. 

UNIVERSITY

Year 13 Personal Statements - your drafts should be saved in your Unifrog locker. Keep working on these and ask for help if you need it - your tutor will be your first port of call for advice.  

 

 

 

Mock Interviews - 21st and 22nd September

For those Year 13s who are taking part in the mock interview event you should have submitted a good CV for your interviewer to look at in advance and you will need to do some interview question practice as per Mrs Chipperfield's email last week.

Oxbridge / Medical and Veterinary Admission Testing

If you are a candidate for Oxbridge, Medical or Veterinary you will be aware that there is an early submission deadline and additional admissions tests. Make sure you liaise with Mrs Penson with regard to your application.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular pathway with hundreds of apprenticeships across a broad range of industries that you can apply for depending on your qualifications. Here we will keep you abreast of apprenticeship information and opportunities.

Apprenticeships - Where To Start

There are plenty of resources regarding apprenticeships if you would like further information or want to look at live opportunities. 

Unifrog has a dedicated apprenticeship tab, Rate My Apprenticeship is a great website to look at, plus you can use job boards such as indeed.com to view live vacancies. 

 

Automotive Industry Apprenticeships

AutoRaise is an organisation which promotes careers for young people interested in the automotive industry. Take a look at the AutoRaise website which includes a new virtual body shop tour which you can access using the link below.

Thames Valley Policy Apprenticeship Scheme

TVP offer a Degree Apprenticeship programme combining operational duties with academic learning resulting in a formal degree qualification after three years and a competitive starting salary with progression.

Engineering / Business Apprenticeships - Serco

Take a look at the careers page of Serco who have a broad apprenticeship programme and are one to have on your radar for would-be engineers in particular.

EY is one of the 'big four' accountancy firms. They run insight days and summer programmes as well as having lots of undergraduate and graduate opportunities. Work Experience In Healthcare

Springpod are running some fantastic virtual work experience programmes including with law firm ReedSmith, Reach plc publishing, engineering with Thames Water, Diversity in STEM, Morgan Sindall Construction, cybersecurity with the British Army and more.

Gap Year 

For those thinking about taking a gap year after sixth form, planning your time in advance will help you to get the most our of your experience. 

Independent Gap Year Advice is a good starting point with information on paid and volunteer opportunities, fundraising and general travel advice plus case studies to hear about the experiences of those who have taken a gap year already.
