Charvil Piggott Primary School

Part of the Piggott Church of England Academy

Foundation Stage

At Charvil Piggott Primary School, our EYFS focuses on nurturing happy, confident, and skillful communicators who are naturally curious about the world. We provide a secure, warm foundation that prepares children for a lifetime of inspired learning.

We ensure learning is meaningful by providing children with hands-on, holistic experiences. Our provision is built upon four guiding principles:

  • The Unique Child: Every child is constantly learning and capable of being resilient, confident, and self-assured.

  • Positive Relationships: Children flourish through the strength of the relationships around them.

  • Enabling Environments: We provide spaces that respond to individual needs, supported by a strong partnership between school and home.

  • Individual Learning Journeys: We recognise that children develop and learn in different ways and at different speeds.

We deliver a personalised and flexible curriculum designed to ignite curiosity. We cover the seven areas of learning that are crucial for building a child’s capacity to learn and thrive:

  1. Communication and language

  2. Physical development

  3. Personal, social and emotional development

  4. Literacy

  5. Mathematics

  6. Understanding the world

  7. Expressive arts and design.

We implement these through the Characteristics of Effective Learning: playing and exploring (engagement), active learning (motivation), and creating and thinking critically (thinking).

All children access a broad, balanced, well-resourced curriculum, which offers enjoyment and success through active learning. Click on the link below to see our curriculum map.

Key Learning Pillars

Reading and Phonics

We teach reading using synthetic phonics via the Rocket Phonics programme. This structured approach is applied throughout the school to ensure consistency. Daily sessions allow children to revisit, practice, and apply new skills in engaging ways.

We foster a love of reading through regular book-sharing, modelling fluency, and providing a rich, diverse library for children to explore. Adults regularly read with children, targeting precise areas for development.

Maths

Following the White Rose scheme, our goal is simple: for every child to understand, enjoy, and succeed in maths. By mastering concepts one small step at a time through practical activities, we build a solid foundation of mathematical "mastery" from the very beginning.

The Year 6 Buddy System

The Year 6 Buddy System is a standout part of life at Charvil Piggott. From their first week in Reception, every child is paired with a Year 6 "Buddy" to help them settle in. Having a big friend on the playground makes the transition to school feel safe and exciting, giving our youngest learners a friendly face to turn to.

THrough our buddies, our Reception children learn our values of kindness and respect,  while our Year 6 pupils develop real leadership and empathy. These friendships bridge the gap between the year groups, knitting our small school together and making sure every child feels they truly belong to the Piggott family.
