The Piggott School

A Church of England Academy

Design & Technology

Vision

To inspire and equip future designers and engineers.

Curriculum Aims

Develop resilient & independent learners who are confident decision makers with a creative, problem-solving mindset through:

*Developing

*Establishing

Curriculum Intent

We aim to provide a curriculum which:

  • Develops problem solving skills.
  • Encourages creativity.
  • Enables students to take design risks.
  • Builds confidence.
  • Develops communication skills.
  • Encourages and develops teamwork.
  • Develops independence.
  • Instils quality.
  • Promotes diversity.
  • Encourages experimentation.
  • Develops an evaluative mindset.
  • Challenges stereotypical responses.
  • Applies cross curricular skills.
  • Develops critical thinking skills.

Key Stage 3

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, students will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.

Key Stage 4

The projects test students’ skills in investigating, designing, making and evaluating. Students apply the skills they have acquired and developed throughout their study (KS2 & 3). The projects allow students to apply knowledge and understanding in a product development process to investigate, design, make and evaluate their prototypes. The projects require students to follow an iterative design process rather than a linear process requiring them to continually test, evaluate and refine ideas.

Key Stage 5

Students undertake design, make and evaluate projects which test students’ skills in designing and making a prototype. The projects allow candidates to apply knowledge and understanding in a product development process to design, make and evaluate prototypes. Students will be encouraged to use creativity and imagination when applying iterative design processes to develop and modify designs, and to design and make prototypes that solve real world problems, considering others’ needs, wants and values.
