Reading

During their time at Charvil Piggott, children read a variety of books from our reading schemes which are book banded by colours relating to their difficulty. Our main reading scheme is powered by Bug Club which offers books both online and in-print for both independent and guided reading. Other books available in our reading boxes include books from Oxford Reading Tree and Storyworld all of which encompass a range of genres such as fiction, non-fiction and comics. The children are encouraged to read a wide range of books within each level and to talk in depth about what they are reading.

Our approach to teaching reading is wide ranging and includes regular group reading sessions, individual reading and library sessions.

Children are encouraged to read daily at home. The children also have password protected access to the ‘Bug Club’ website which contains a variety of online books for them to read at home, selected by the class teacher at the children’s reading stage.
