2018 Mathematics Masterclasses

Two of our Year 9 students, Mia Palmer and Alec Oliver, have recently had the opportunity to attend the 2018 Mathematics Masterclasses, organised on behalf of the Royal Institution of Great Britain.

The Masterclasses are designed to encourage, inspire and engage students and introduce them to aspects of maths which are not usually covered in the school curriculum.

Alec Oliver fed back as follows:

“For a course of six weeks, myself and another student from Year 9 went to Holyport College to partake in a series of maths masterclasses. These sessions were about applying mathematics to real-life situations, from the statistics behind medicine to the skill of trading oil. The masterclasses took complex problems and asked us to answer them by applying maths. Each week, a speaker from a specific field ran a question session; this allowed those in attendance to get advice on what steps we would need to take to get the best out of our mathematical education. This was a great opportunity to further my interest in maths, but also get a chance to hear from and produce ideas with a group of people who love maths.”
